Padel in Tenerife: how to find people to play with

By Onda editorial teamPublished 2 min read

Padel is always played two against two, so you need three other players. In Tenerife the quickest ways to find them are open matches at clubs and in booking apps, tournaments run by the Federación Canaria de Pádel and groups that meet regularly. Above all, be honest about your level.

Why you need three other players

Under the FIP rules the court is 10 metres wide, 20 metres long and fully enclosed. One pair plays on each side of the net, so there are always four of you. If you arrive in Tenerife alone or as a couple, you will nearly always be looking for the other half of the match.

Where people play on the island

In 2024 the FIP estimated more than 180 facilities with more than 650 courts across the Canary Islands. The count covers clubs and accommodation, so hotels with their own court are included. If you are on holiday, start by asking at reception. The FIP gives no figure for Tenerife alone.

Open matches at the club and in apps

Many clubs and booking apps work with open matches: someone books a court and leaves spots free for others. In Playtomic, for example, you pick the sport, place and time, then join an open match or start one yourself. You don’t need a team; you are matched with opponents of a similar level. If you are outside the range a match asks for, you can request a spot and the other players decide. To join, Playtomic requires an account and online payment.

Also ask your club about in-house leagues or regular sessions for newcomers. That is often the easiest way into a group that sticks together.

Tournaments and leagues of the Federación Canaria

The Federación Canaria de Pádel lists tournaments, its calendar, rankings and the team competition Copa Canarias on its website, along with licences and its list of member clubs. According to the FIP, the federation reached 6,246 player licences in 2024, a record for it, and 16 affiliated clubs. If you like competing, that is where you find players of a comparable level.

Regular groups with Onda

With Onda you create a plan with place, time and spots in three steps and share one link with your group. Whoever says yes is in, even without an account. Once all spots are taken, others go on the waiting list, and if someone drops out, the next person moves up. Onda is a prototype; the public launch is still to come.

Before your first match

  • Be honest about your level. A match is more fun for everyone when the players are close in ability.
  • Agree beforehand how you split the court fee and who brings the balls.
  • If you can’t make it, cancel in good time so someone else can take your spot.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a regular partner to play?

No. With open matches you sign up on your own. Playtomic, for example, says you don’t need a team and are matched with opponents of a similar level.

Do I need a licence?

The Federación Canaria de Pádel issues licences for its competitions, and you can apply on canariaspadel.es. Whether a club asks for anything for a casual booked match is best checked with the club.

How many padel courts are there in the Canary Islands?

In 2024 the FIP estimated more than 180 facilities across the Canary Islands, clubs and accommodation together, with more than 650 courts. It gives no separate figure for Tenerife.

Can I already use Onda for this?

Onda is a prototype. Creating a plan, sharing the link and the waiting list already work there; the public launch is still to come.
